S&P 500 - Total ESG scores by Industry - Revisited

 The Total ESG values by industry reported mean values for all the firms in the S&P 500 sample but there are several problems with the data.  The first problem is that there is not an equal distribution of companies across industries. This means that show industries will have a high number of companies in them and some industries will have less than 1.  The second problem is that Yahoo Finance does not have ESG data on all the 500 companies in the S&P 500. Yahoo Finance only has ESG data on 443 companies. Lastly, there is a question of whether to calculate the mean for the industry by the size of the firm: market capitalization value.  All these things need to be investigated.

The question of course is how do these problems with the ESG data impact the analysis?

Starting ESG Blog

  Today, I will be starting my ESG blog.  Normally, I work with ESG data from Thomson Reuters (ASSET4); however, this data comes with limitations.  I have recently started working with ESG data from Yahoo Finance.  I will be using this data for this blog since Yahoo Finance's data license allows free use of data for research and educational purposes. The chart below shows the mean Total ESG scores for each industry in the S&P 500. Although there are 500 companies in the S&P 500 only 443 have Total ESG scores.  The ESG scores are static meaning they are updated periodically. The chart represents the data downloaded in January 2022. I should add the lower the ESG score the less ESG risk. Thus, the real estate industry has lower ESG risk than the Oil & Gas production industry.
